Diana Frances Spencer was born at Park House, Sandringham, Norfolk, on July 1, 1961. The youngest daughter of John Spencer, 8th Earl of Althorp, and Frances Ruth Roche, she grew up in a gentry family alongside her two sisters, Sarah and Jane, and their younger brother, Carlos. He spent the first years of his life in the family residence at Sandringham, where he received his early education from governesses. In 1968, after the divorce of the Spencer couple, little Diana was placed in parental custody, and that same year she entered the King's Lynn school. In 1970 she moved to the female boarder at Riddlesworth Hall, and in 1973 she entered West Heath, another boarder in the county of Kent. Between 1977 and 1978 it was raised in Switzerland and finally settled in London.

November 1977 she met Prince Charles, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II of England and heir to the British throne, whom she romantically joined two years later. On February 24, 1981, the Buckingham Palace spokesman announced the official engagement of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles; from that moment Diana moved her home to Clarence House, residence of the queen mother. The couple's wedding, which was held on July 29, 1981 in the London Cathedral of Sant Paul and officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, became an event of wide international repercussion, broadcast on television to seven hundred million viewers; in London, it summoned more than a million people, and the main members of the European aristocracy and one hundred and seventy heads of state did not miss the ceremony.

Due to her marriage to Charles, Prince of Wales, Diana received the title of Princess of Wales, although her familiarity and friendliness immediately popularized the nickname "Lady Di" among her subjects.

The relationship with her husband was increasingly distant and dry, so in 1992 the royal couple decided to separate and a few years later, in August 1996, the divorce was made official, however, knowing the great love of the people for Diana, they did not He withdrew the title of Princess of Wales. After her divorce, Diana poured her energy into participating in various humanitarian causes, always helping the most unprotected groups in the world and sometimes participating with other personalities such as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Nelson Mandela, among others.

On June 21, 1982, the new princess gave birth to her firstborn, Prince William, at Saint Mary's Hospital in Paddington. That same year Diana of Wales made her first official solo trip to attend the funeral of former actress and Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly. In April of the following year, Diana accompanied Prince Charles to Australia and New Zealand on what was the couple's first official trip. The second son of the Princes of Wales, Harry, was born on September 15, 1984

What was Princess Diana like?

She broke many of the schemes and protocols that were traditionally untouchable: for example, in her time it was not common for a divorce to take place or for a person to invest as much time in humanitarian work as Lady Di did.

For the English, Diana was a noble, charismatic, supportive, pious woman who always had a smile no matter what she was experiencing. Everyone remembers her unique style of dressing, and that she wasn't worried about being herself in spite of, even, what her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, thought of her.But more than that, Lady Di had a complex personality, full of feelings that ranged from deep sadness to intense desires to love and be loved, which she demonstrates in her famous phrase:

I would like to be a queen in people's hearts, but I don't see myself as the queen of this country.

Her simplicity and her idealism of a reality guided by the heart led her to perform many acts of humanity that to this day cause curiosity and admiration.

I believe that the greatest disease in the world today is of people who do not feel loved. I know that I can give love for a minute, half an hour, a day, a month, but I can give it and I am very happy to do it. It is what I want to do.

One of the aspects that those close to the queen of hearts highlighted was her temperament and way of behaving, as well as her sweetness, vulnerability and sensitivity. Her character was balanced and adaptable to the environment, which made living with others very calm.

Dress of revenge

On the night of June 29, 19942, Vanity Fair magazine organized the annual benefit gala at the Serpentine Gallery in London to raise funds for the art gallery. This event coincided with the broadcast of a documentary on British national television in which Prince Charles, from whom Diana had been separated since 1992, made public his love affair with Camilla Parker Bowles while still married, which meant acknowledging the fact that he had committed adultery, which was also a humiliation for the Princess of Wales.

Diana had not planned to attend the Vanity Fair event, to which she was invited, due to the embarrassment caused by the great publicity given to the interview, alleging, on the other hand, that she did not dispone of no outfit to wear to the evening, although two nights before the event she finally accepted the invitation

The princess intended to wear a Valentino design, causing the publication of said information that Diana decided to change her outfit at the last moment. According to her stylist Anna Harvey, the princess wanted to look "like a million bucks."

The impact caused by the controversial image of the Princess of Wales on the same day that her husband made his infidelity public led to her outfit becoming known as the "revenge dress".

Diana died in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997 and although she was initially denied a state funeral, the Royal family changed their minds in the face of the overwhelming outpouring of grief and love from the British people.

Tribute to Lady Di for her birthday

For reasons of her birthday, a statue was inaugurated in honor of Diana in the 'Sunken Garden', the gardens of Kensington Palace in London. A symbolic place, since the princess spent her first days as a 'royal' in this palace and it is currently the residence of Prince William. The monument, which has been designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, shows the princess surrounded by several children as a symbol of her humanitarian work. This sculpture will honor the memory of Lady Di in one of her favorite places.
